Free education for all is so good to hear but are the children of the poor keen to avail themselves of this opportunity provided by the government or are the parents of these children enthusiastic enough ?
They find no use in education that leads to nowhere. To them, education is a dead end or a vain pursuit. That is why we have an alarming school dropout rate inspite of free books, stationery and uniform. To improve this, the government of India also started the “Mid-day Meal program” in the year 2005. This provided free lunch to the children in government schools hoping that the parents might send in their children in the rage of hunger. Underprivileged parents whose sole motive for their children is to settle them with their families as labourers or housewives. Without vocational training, education is a body without a life. So, for the sake of the weaker section of the society, adding vocational studies as a subject in schools is the need of the hour.
